A classic, tender, and easy-to-decorate sugar cookie perfect for holiday baking and festive fun.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened at room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg, (large)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, (measured correctly)
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder, (use aluminum free)
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Position a rack in the center of the oven.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Set the dry ingredient mixture aside.
  5. In a stand mixer or a large bowl with a hand mixer, beat the softened unsalted butter with the granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  6. Add the large egg to the butter and sugar mixture.
  7. Add the vanilla extract to the butter and sugar mixture.
  8. Beat the mixture until the egg and vanilla are just combined.
  9. Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients in three parts.
  10. Mix on low speed until the flour is just incorporated and a dough forms.
  11. Do not overmix the dough.
  12. Divide the cookie dough into two equal parts.
  13. Lightly flour a clean surface.
  14. Place one part of the dough on the floured surface.
  15. Roll the dough out evenly to a thickness of ¼-inch.
  16. Use your favorite cookie cutters to cut out shapes from the rolled dough.
  17. Place the cut-out cookies onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  18. Repeat with the second part of the dough and any scraps.
  19. Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for 10 minutes.
  20. Bake until the edges are just beginning to turn golden.
  21. Remove the baking sheet from the oven.
  22. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes.
  23. Carefully transfer the partially cooled cookies to a wire rack.
  24. Allow the cookies to cool completely on the wire rack before decorating with cookie icing.

Notes

Ensure butter is properly softened, not melted, for the best dough texture.
Avoid overmixing the dough once flour is added to keep cookies tender.
Roll dough to an even ¼-inch thickness for uniform baking.
Watch cookies closely; they are done when edges are just lightly golden.
Cool cookies completely on a wire rack before any decorating.
